What is an MRI?

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

It is a medical imaging test that uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the inside of the body.

It is a non-invasive way to view internal organs and structures, such as the brain, spinal cord, heart, bones and joints.

It is often used to diagnose and detect a wide range of medical conditions which can include tumours, infections, injuries, and neurological disorders.

MRI can provide detailed information that cannot be obtained from other imaging techniques such as X-rays or CT scans.

What to expect?

Before your MRI you will be asked to remove any clothing or jewellery that may interfere with the images and you may be asked to wear a gown.
If you have any metal in your body, such as a pacemaker, you may not be able to have the test.
For the exam you will be asked to lie down, be given headphones to listen to music and be in contact with our technician throughout your experience.
You may be injected with a contrast if relevant for your particular exam.
During your MRI, multiple images will be taken and the test typically takes about 20-60 minutes, dependent upon the type of MRI you are having.
After the test, you can go back to your normal activities.
The images will be analysed by our highly experienced radiologist, who will provide a diagnostic report to your doctor.
Your doctor will then discuss the results with you at your follow up appointment.

We understand that many people suffer from anxiety or claustrophobia, making an MRI a daunting experience.

At Lake Imaging we are here to help, and our highly experienced staff are trained to assist patients who may be claustrophobic or highly anxious.

Latest MRI technology offers a range of features that can help improve the experience and comfort level for these patients. We do also recommend that our patients speak to their referring practitioner, and to our friendly booking team to discuss all options. This will ensure we are able to provide the best possible experience for our patients. Don’t let fear or uncertainty hold you back from taking care of your health.
